Hundreds of people have signed up as volunteers for Labour, following its change of leadership this week.

The party has also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars since Jacinda Ardern was voted in as their new leader on Tuesday.

Ms Ardern has just seven weeks to turn around the party's fortunes, after it recorded its lowest poll result in 22 years.

Mt Roskill MP Michael Wood said people spontaneously offered to volunteer and put on hoardings on their properties when he was door-knocking yesterday.

Labour campaign manager Andrew Kirton said it's a similar story in other parts of the country.

"People are turning up at their local Labour offices and saying, 'I want to help out, I want Jacinda in as Prime Minister and I want Kelvin Davis in as deputy'."

But campaign manager Mr Kirton said the odds remain in National's favour.

"We've got a real challenge ahead because the National Party are a juggernaut, they're well funded, they're organised and we're the underdogs but we're going to give it everything we've got.
