Australian Julian Wilson has continued his good surfing form to progress to the third round of the world championship event at Lower Trestles.

World No.5 Wilson laid down a combined score of 13.27 from his two best rides in small waves at the Californian break on Monday.

It was enough for Wilson, who surged into championship contention with his win in Tahiti last month, to see off Brazilians Caio Ibelli and Jadson Andre in the first-round heat.

Wilson has never won at Trestles, but was finalist in 2013.

"That was a tough heat. Strategy came into play a lot," he said.

"I didn't feel like I was on the best waves. I had to find my opportunities. I was just looking for any waves to get up and find scores on."

The win sees Wilson directly progress to the third round, where he's joined by compatriot and three-time world champion Mick Fanning.

Fanning beat Hawaiian Ezekiel Lau and French Polynesian Michel Bourez in the first round.

Australia's world No.3 Matt Wilkinson lost to compatriot Bede Durbridge and has been forced into the elimination second round, where he faces American Evan Geiselman.

Australians Owen Wright, Ethan Ewing, Adrian Buchan, Joel Parkinson, Connor O'Leary and Jack Freestone also face elimination in the second round after failing to claim first-up heat wins.
