A wild crash halted the latest Indycar race in Pocono.

Eight laps into the race, Robert Wickens and Ryan Hunter-Reay made contact and spun out in spectacular scenes.

Wickens' car flew into the air and smashed into the high fence, firing debris all across the track. The Canadian driver was taken from his car and loaded into a medical helicopter and taken to a nearby hospital.

IndyCar said Wickens was awake and alert as he was taken to a hospital.

Medical workers calmly attended to Wickens, who was taken to an ambulance before he was transported to the helicopter. The impact of the wreck tore out a large section of fencing that IndyCar said would take at least one hour to repair. The race was red flagged and drivers were allowed out of their cars.

Alexander Rossi leads the race, while Kiwi championship leader Scott Dixon had moved up into the top 10 before racing was halted.

A delay of more than an hour is expected as fixes are made to the track.

"First and foremost you're just hoping everyone is okay. There's some pretty big hits there," Dixon told the host broadcaster during the delay.

"Looking at some of the replays, Hunter-Reay and Wickens went into each other and then into the fence and then you're trying to slow down as quick as possible but in speedway configuration here it's really hard to pull these cars up, really hard to move them abruptly without spinning out…again just hope everybody is okay," he added.
