Irrigation New Zealand is labelling a Board of Inquiry draft decision on nitrogen limits in a Hawke's Bay river reasonable, but impractical for farmers.
The draft - released yesterday - includes changes from an earlier decision, including essentially maintaining the current nitrogen limit for the Tukituki River.
CEO of Irrigation New Zealand, Andrew Curtis, says they recognise the positive steps taken by the board in excluding some hill country farms, forestry and lifestyle blocks from having to gain consents for excess nitrogen levels.
But he says the reality is most commercial enterprises will still require one and nutrient limits remain unrealistic for a productive working agricultural landscape.
