Protesters against the closure of charter schools have braved heavy rain for a march in Auckland city.

Organisers estimated over 200 people showed up, including students in uniform from the Vanguard Military School.

ACT Party leader David Seymour, who led the march, says he was humbled by the turnout.

"It reflects the strength of feeling - to get the crowd we got in the weather we had is something that the government needs to seriously look twice at."

The march was against the government's intention to have all charter schools closed by the end of the year.

Leader of the Opposition Bill English is expected to visit the Pacific Advance Secondary School to show his support for charter schools tomorrow morning.

Protestors walked from Takutai Square near Britomart up to Aotea Square.

On Facebook today, Mr Seymour said the protest was to "send this arrogant Government a message: Back off closing Charter Schools."
