The Prime Minister is adamant Shane Jones has done nothing wrong.

The Regional Economic Development Minister is under fire after attending a ministerial meeting about a cultural project that received $5 million from the Provincial Growth Fund.

Jacinda Ardern would not definitively say whether Ministers should leave meetings where a conflict of interest has been declared.

Ardern says had Jones left the room it would have helped the perception issue, but he is in the right.

"The Minister raised the issue proactively with the Cabinet Office and followed their advice on how to manage it."

Ardern says the conflict itself is simply the fact Jones was aware of the project and knew some of the people involved.
