Claim and counter claim in Parliament over the latest development in the Pike River Mine disaster

The Government's denying outright any suggestion of a cover-up, after footage of work in the mine's drift was leaked earlier this week.

New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters asks how that can be the case when the victims' families, the Royal Commission and a Parliamentary committee had never seen the pictures before.

His response was blunt, asking "what do you call a person that makes out a statement that they have seen it, when all these people say they have never been shown it?"

However, Prime Minister Bill English said it's clear from police statements the Pike River families saw the video, and he maintains anyone who was required to make a decision has had the videos available to them.

"They will be available again by the end of the week, there is no cover up," he said.

In amongst the latest information regarding the pictures, Labour Leader Andrew Little is still backing manned re-entry into Pike River.

This is despite being told in the House it's the new rules he championed stopping that from happening.

Bill English said Mr Little was one of the driving forces behind the strict Workplace Safety guidelines adopted following the explosion.

He said it is precisely those changes to the law that mean nobody can volunteer to go in, neither can a politician compel somebody to do so.

But Mr Little's holding his position, saying good experts are telling us it's safe to organise manned re-entry.
