The Northcote seat is staying blue.

National has held the Northcote seat on Auckland's North Shore, with Dan Bidois becoming an MP in the by-election.

With all the votes counted, National's Dan Bidois won by over 1,300 votes. He drew just over 10,000 votes, with Labour's Shanan Halbert falling behind with 8,785.

Mr Bidois says he was relatively confident coming into tonight, but not arrogant.

"It's very humbling to be able to say that I am the newly elected member of the Northcote. And I just want to be a fighter for them every day, prove to them that their vote counted and their vote was worth it."

Opposition leader Simon Bridges claims the win is proof the Prime Minister's policies are not popular in Northcote.

He says some things such as the regional fuel tax, are really annoying not only those in the electorate but all of Auckland.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says despite the loss, Labour is proud of whittling down National's hold on the seat.

Since it's inception, Northcote has been Labour-led for only one term, which was in the late 90s.
