UPDATED 5.27pm Greg Brownless has been elected as the new mayor of Tauranga, according to provisional local government election results.

With 98 per cent of the returned votes counted Mr Brownless has received 8,513 votes.

Mr Brownless beat out 10 other candidates to become mayor and said he is eagerly anticipating getting "stuck into" his new role.

When incumbent mayor of 12 years Stuart Crosby announced he wasn't seeking another term, Mr Brownless put his name into the hat late and is very pleased with the amount of support he received.

He said he hasn't decided on a deputy mayor yet but says the next thing to do is to get into council and catch up with official documents.

He said he will also talk to those who have been elected so they are ready to hit the ground running.
