Lobbying is underway to get the Government to tighten privacy laws as controversy surrounds the Hager-Rawshark case.

Westpac Bank's facing criticism for passing on details about Nicky Hager's accounts to police, despite police not having a warrant or court order to obtain them.

United Future leader Peter Dunne has made it clear he thinks Westpac and police overstepped the mark with their actions.

"I think it does need to be at the very least warranted and then I think the request needs to be limited to information that is relevant to the particular matter that they're investigating. I think the days of the fishing expedition are over."

He said he is having ongoing discussions with the Government about the laws that cover the area.

"The discussion is a lively ongoing one ... I think it is very important that as we move towards more and more of our services being delivered online, and the interface between public and private becoming less and less stark, that these matters are very clearly stated and protections are in place."
