Hopes for turnout boost from competitive Wellington elections

Wellington City will get a new mayor but the mayoral race could come down to the final hour.

Councillors Jo Coughlan, Andy Foster, Justin Lester, Helene Ritchie and Nicola Young are all standing to replace outgoing mayor Celia Wade-Brown.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett, policy analyst Keith Johnson and activist Johnny Overton bring the total candidate count to eight.

Newstalk ZB's Tim Fookes said the competitive mayoral race has played out in dozens of debates and will hopefully encourage people to vote.

"There is this thought that maybe people are holding off posting in their voting papers until they just find out a little bit more about the candidates.

"But effectively barely a day has gone by and barely a night has gone by where there hasn't been some kind of meeting, some of debate going on."

He said the debates have been happening "all across the suburbs, all across the city" and he hopes that translates into "decent turnout".

Ending the road congestion across Hutt Valley, Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti is one of the biggest concerns for the Wellington region's election candidates.

Porirua and Kapiti have six mayoral candidates, Hutt City and South Wairarapa have five, and Upper Hutt and Carterton have two.

Across the region, only Masterton mayor Lyn Patterson, one Wellington councillor and one Kapiti councillor will be reelected unopposed.

Tim Fookes said there has been lots of debate about reducing congestion, with ideas like the Basin Flyover and light rail.

He said light rail is estimated to cost between $600 million and $1 billion which makes it controversial.
