Updated 3.00pm: Wild weather is about to hit Waikato and residents are being urged to secure their outdoor furniture and keep up to date with Civil Defence warnings.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued from Waikato to Northland.

Waikato Civil Defence is monitoring the situation and will be posting updates online.

Emergency Management Coordinator Matthew Pryor said the whole region is being hit from top to bottom.

"Make sure that if you're looking at heavy rain, make sure your drains are unblocked. Any loose patio furniture, trampolines, that type of stuff, it would be a good idea to put that aside or somewhere safe."

Matthew Pryor said it's not a great start to the school holidays.

"The whole region has been hit from the top to the bottom."

Waitomo and the high country "have a heavy rain warning which we are keeping an eye on."

There is also snow on the desert road and the Napier-Taupo road.
