NIWA is predicting that the next three months will see temperatures higher than average all over the country.
The warm weather comes off the back of a hot summer, which saw several centres reach record temperatures.
NIWA principal scientist Chris Brandolino says airflow over the country's expected to be more north-easterly than normal.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we see some days, especially with the first half of this outlook, where we see more humid days."
Brandolino says warm temperatures aren't the only thing heading our way.
"We think because of those warm ocean temperatures in the Tasman Sea, that will bring an increased or elevated chance of big rainfall events."
