Financially stretched parents looking for something to do these holidays are being urged to pick up a newspaper for inspiration.

The festive season can be a difficult time for families on low incomes, due to the increased pressures on the wallet.

Mangere Budgeting Services CEO Darryl Evans said event pages of the newspapers are full of affordable activities.

"You know there's so many good things you can do with less in New Zealand, we've got some great parks and beaches, you know you can take the kids to free events."

And he said parents who couldn't afford to splash out on expensive presents shouldn't feel guilty feel guilty as spending quality time is what counts.

Evans said in the long run, kids will remember parental attention more than they remember gifts.

"We tell people to not go overboard, to remember the true value of Christmas which, to me, is about spending true quality time with your loved ones."
