Youth counselling service Youthline says teenage volunteers could hold the key to its long-term survival..

Chief executive Stephen Bell wouldn't confirm reports that jobs could be on the line due to budget cuts, but would say Youthline is reviewing how it delivers services.

He said the challenge is to get teens aged 15 to 17, who are often a bit directionless, to get involved and help their peers.

"If we can get that equation right, then I actually think [with] what we're trying to do, [and] shape the organisation to deliver the best outcomes, over the next decade we will fly," he said.

Bell said Youthline, like all organisations, has to face the reality of limited resources.

He said he will be talking to staff about a potential new shape for the organisation, over the coming week.

"We're probably working with five or 10 times as many young people as we were four years ago, so we have to be conscious of how we shape the organisation to do that work and not overstretch ourselves," he said.

Young people who need help or want to get involved, can text 234 or call 0800 Youthline.
