The Drug Foundation says figures from a new survey on cannabis law reform are 'off the charts'.

Research for TV3's The Hui shows 75 percent of Māori support full legalisation of the drug.

It follows recent work by the Drug Foundation that found 35 percent of New Zealanders overall support legalisation, and another 32 percent in favour of it being decriminalised.

Drug Foundation Executive Director Ross Bell says there are good reasons Māori want a different approach to the laws around marijuana.

"Cannabis use rates are pretty similar between Māori and non-Māori, but Māori are four times more likely to get a conviction."

He says Māori are much more likely to get a cannabis conviction than anyone else, so it makes sense they want cannabis treated as a health issue.

"That resource will go into prevention and treatment, and Māori aren't burdened by getting a whole lot of criminal records a lot more than non-Maori do."
