Ever wanted to play petanque in the nude?

Naturists from around the country will have their chance this week at their national festival in Upper Hutt.

The National Naturist Festival in Te Marua will see people take part in a range of activities and socialise - all without clothes on.

The week-long festival kicks off today, and includes a full sports programme, crafts and a number of other leisure activities.

President of the New Zealand Naturist Federation Donna Miller says it's great being able to take off your clothes, which you generally have to wear when you're outside.

"The attraction is that there are so many health benefits, mentally and physically, to a person for engaging in clothes-free recreation."

However, it has been a slightly chilly start for festival goers, a high of 18 degrees is expected, and there could be a few light showers this afternoon.

The festival is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
