Shine: Christmas can exacerbate domestic violence problems

Domestic violence victims are being urged to reach out this Christmas.

Both Police and Shine are urging victims to reach out for help, amid predictions of a surge in call outs over the holidays.

Shine policy advisor Holly Carrington says financial stress, family friction and alcohol exacerbate the problem at this time of year.

But she says there's more to it than that.

"Families have a lot more interaction over that period, which can trigger violence where there's already a situation of one person in a relationship controlling and abusing another person."

Nearly 80 percent of recorded assaults against women are committed by a family member.

Carrington says while refuges can fill up, there will always be help for those who need it.

"There is help available, and we don't want people to not try to get help because they think they won't be able to."

Victims can call Shine's help line on 0508 744 633
