Plenty of agencies but not enough support.

A parole specialist says more needs to be done to help prisoners make a safe transition back into the community.

Dunedin murderer George Trounson is set to be released on parole this month - his seventh time.

He was 17-years-old when he beat his flatmate to death.

Most of Trounson's recalls to prison have been because of alcohol issues.

Judith Fyfe, a lawyer who specialises in parole, said there is not enough support for prisoners transitioning back into society.

"There are going to be times where a person loses confidence, has no accommodation - that's a huge issue, despite all the agencies around there is very little support for people when they leave prison.'

Fyfe said many prisoners are likely to relapse, if they have spent more than two years in jail.

"There's going to be some relapses and some lapses for anyone for anyone who's been in prison, in my view, for over two years, the adjustment period is a particularly difficult one."
