A Canterbury district councillor from Selwyn is ruffling police feathers, after warning Facebook users of a police checkpoint.

Malcolm Lyall posted on the Christchurch Police Check Points page on Friday, saying a full check point was in operation.

Mr Lyall hasn't responded to Newstalk ZB's request for comment, but Police say they do not condone checkpoint warnings on social media .

They say while they welcome people raising awareness of the dangers of driving drunk, posting about specific checkpoints is not the way to reduce risk.

In a statement, Police say anyone who encourages someone who may be drunk or drugged to avoid Police detection needs to think about how they'd feel if that person then went on to kill or maim someone they care about.
