Scammers are trying to exploit the generosity of New Zealanders after the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Westpac is warning of an email scam targeting people wanting to make donations.

The scammers send an email carrying Westpac branding, and a bank account number to accept donations for those affected by the tragedy.

Westpac says customers can identify the scam by hovering over the link in the email - which will take them to a website called 'mothers awakening'.

The bank is asking anyone who receives this type of email to forward it to their 'phishing' scam department, [email protected]
