National says the Government shouldn't allow convicted whistle-blower Chelsea Manning to visit the country.

Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified US diplomatic and military documents, but was released after President Barack Obama commuted her sentence.

She is due to come here next month for two speaking engagements.

Because of her espionage and computer fraud convictions, Chelsea Manning will need special clearance.

Immigration spokesperson Michael Woodhouse says we need to uphold high standards over who can come the New Zealand.

"It sets a very low bar if we are going to glorfy the theft of hundreds of thousands of military documents. What she committed is a very serious offence."

Woodhouse says Manning's criminal record means she'd need special permission to come here.

He says that should be denied.

"She was convicted of espionage and stealing military secrets. The purpose of her trip is to glorify it, make money out of it, and frankly I don't think that's appropriate."

He also warns that it won't enhance our relationship with the US.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern should she could not comment as it was a matter for the Minister of Immigration.

A spokesperson for Associate Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi says he hasn't received any such request for Chelsea Manning yet.
