Brand new types of speed cameras could be making their way to a road near you.

Called point-to-point cameras, they take pictures of each car at two points on the same stretch of road, to work out a car's average speed and if you are over the limit.

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter's asked the Ministry of Transport to look at introducing them.

She says they have been extremely successful in Australia, the UK and Europe.

AA spokesperson Mark Stockdale says they're generally seen to work - but should not just be installed all over the place.

"For the public to support them, they need to be shown that they are in locations where there is a history of dangerous speeding which is causing a safety risk."

He says AA members are more concerned about people running red lights, and there are only six of those cameras nationwide.

"But the reality is, people are running red lights across New Zealand and they want to see more red light cameras. Any analysis has to show why point-to-point cameras would be the best investment."
