A man needs a steel plate put in his head after he was assaulted at a boy racer meet near McLean's Island on Sunday morning.
He and his cousin, who is 23 weeks pregnant, had gone to find some friends at about 3am on Pound Rd, but when they arrived they were immediately involved in an altercation.
A family member of the assaulted man told the Christchurch Star that he was attacked by an offender wearing "knuckle dusters" who also smashed out windows in his cousin's car.
He and his cousin had driven in separate vehicles to the meet. She fled and hid in her vehicle when the assault took place.
The victim's eye socket is so badly damaged, he needs surgery to put a steel plate in.
"They will never go cruising again. I hope my nephew will be okay," the family member said.
Police have confirmed they have received a complaint about the assault and are following "strong lines of inquiry".
