A judge has described a Dunedin child pornography offender's attitude as 'troubling'.

When 72-year-old Phillip Burns' email account was shut down after he downloaded child-abuse material, he set up a new one days later and carried on.

Analysis of his computer history found he'd been trawling for illegal pictures since 2012.

In 2015, his searches triggered an alert at the United States' National Center for Missing and Exploited Children - which contacted the authorities here.

He appeared in the Dunedin District Court, where his counsel said he's made a $10,000 donation to Plunket and no longer owns an internet-accessible phone.

He has been sentenced to six months' home detention, and 150 hours of community work.
