A cyclist is dead after a crash with a car in Nelson - the fourth road death today in less than 11 hours.

The fatal crash took place at State Highway 6, Wakapuaka Road, at 10am this morning.

The latest crash continues a horror period on the roads - bringing the total killed in one week to 26.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area as there will be lengthy delays, police said.

Earlier today one person died in a crash involving a car and a motorbike near Te Awamutu.

And two people - one of them a 12-year-old child - died in a collision involving a car and a truck in Christchurch.

In the crash near Te Awamutu, police were called around 7am to a crash between a car and a motorbike.

The crash happened on Cambridge Rd, in Rotoorangi. There was heavy fog in the area at the time of the crash.

The road is expected to remain closed for some time.
