Four people have died on New Zealand’s roads so far this weekend.

The first fatal crash happened last night in Darifled, Canterbury. One person died and two were injured after their car went off the road.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Old West Coast Road around 10.50 last night.

The two survivors of the crash were taken to hospital with serious and moderate injuries.

Later, three people died in a crash involving a truck and a van just south of Taupō.

The crash on State Highway 1 in Hātepe, 24km south from Taupō, occurred about 4.15am today.

St John ambulance attended and treated three patients who all died at the scene.

One further person was taken to Taupō Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It comes after April was declared the deadliest month on New Zealand’s roads in a decade, after 45 people were killed in accidents.
