Anti-violence advocates believe new trials automatically placing offender's history in front of judges, is a step in the right direction.

LISTEN ABOVE: Barrister Catriona Maclennan joins Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast with ASB to discuss the new trials for family violence bail decisions.

The trials are for judges making bail decisions and will begin next week in Porirua and Christchurch courts.

Family Violence Death Review Committee and Associate Professor Julia Tolmie hopes the trials will become permanent.

She said the family violence system is fragmented and this move would allow judges to see the bigger picture.

"What we see at the moment with the family violence system is that its fairly fragmented.. people aren't able to connect up the dots so this is a really good step towards undoing some of that fragmentation."

Right now judges only see an offender's history, if police oppose bail conditions.
