Historians and rugby supporters alike are praising the Crusaders' management over their decision to review the team's name.

The Super Rugby team came under fire for their name and the imagery around it, because it is connected with the Crusades conflicts which targeted Muslims.

The association has been seen as 'untenable' after the Christchurch terror attack, in which 50 Muslim worshippers were killed while attending afternoon prayer.

Yesterday, the team announced they would be removing knights riding on horseback from their pre-game entertainment, and New Zealand Rugby has said a name change is possible before the 2020 season.

Retired history professor Peter Lineham said seeking advice on the matter is the right decision.

"I'm absolutely delighted the Crusaders have taken the initiative. They could, of course, have hoped it would die down, but instead, they are saying let's hear from people."

He said the symbolism makes a direct reference to the Crusades.

"The Crusades are remembered very, very bitterly in the Middle East. There is a very deep awareness of the bloody nature of those Crusades."

The Canterbury Supporters Club said it's behind the Crusaders, no matter what they're called.

Supporters Club president Michael Wagteveld said it's a unique situation and it's loaded with emotion.

"Our stance on this is effectively irrespective of personal opinion, we will support the Canterbury Rugby Union on what decision they make."

He said he is pleased they are canvassing opinions, but not everyone needs to have a say.

"Whether it's national, I'm not so sure about. I think it should be a local thing. It's the locals that have been affected the most."
