LISTEN TO UPDATES ON NEWSTALK ZB

  • There are 63 new cases, 62 in the community, 1 in MIQ. This brings the total number associated with the outbreak to 210 with 198 Auckland and 12 in Wellington
  • 12 of the cases are in hospital, done in the ICU
  • Yesterday there were 80,000 vaccinations and 50,000 Covid-19 tests, both record numbers
  • Chris Hipkins also said that those over 30 can now get vaccinated
  • Over 40 more locations of interest added, most of them supermarkets
  • The demographic breakdown of the cluster has also been added to the ministry website
  • Over 20,000 contacts identified
  • Further detection of Covid-19 in Warkworth, with pop up testing being done
  • Ashley Bloomfield called out people being racist to the Samoan community affected by the outbreak, calling them “gutless” and asked New Zealanders to be kind
  • He also said contacts were not allowed to leave their homes for exercise, but their household companions could - provided they stayed away from others.
  • IN MIQ, they are introducing a Day 6 test for those where there is a positive case on their floor
  • On the issue of whether people got saline vaccines at Highbrook, Bloomfield said it was in July where at the end of a day a left-over vial indicated some people might not have received a vaccine that day. But Bloomfield said it was not clear that anyone had missed a dose and they had been seeking advice around this
  • However, immediate changes were made to ensure more regular checking of the vials, rather than leaving it to the end of the day, Labels were now also being out on syringes once they were drawn up
  • Bloomfield said in mid-July there was no discussion around booster shots and Pfizer was a two-shot regime. He said they were now looking at whether to offer the 732 people at the centre that day a third dose, in case a small number had missed out on one dose
  • Letters would be sent out to those people tomorrow, and decisions would be made on the third dose based on scientific advice
  • Hipkins said more primary care facilities were being brought into the vaccinations programme and about 650 vaccination places would be available.
  • Changes had been made to streamline the way GPS were brought on board. The vaccine was free wherever they got it
  • Hipkins says they are exploring ways Parliament can be done remotely. This will be done through the speaker and business community
  • During question time Bloomfield revealed a positive case had been found in Warkworth which would likely explain the wastewater detection
