A container clampdown by Countdown has been a plastic re-use success.
The supermarket says its BYO packaging experiment, which began in 21 stores in Auckland and Christchurch, has worked well and will now become a nationwide policy.
It's been allowing customers to bring reusable containers to buy food sold from the deli, meat and seafood counters.
Employees give the containers a quick clean before filling them.
Spokesperson Kiri Hannifin says it's a small way customers can reduce their single-use plastic waste.
She says they mostly had positive feedback through the trial.
The only request was to use eco-friendly dishwashing liquid to clean the containers.
