One city council will be trying to put a stop to National Crate Day this year.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council will vote today on whether to amend local alcohol bylaws to stop public drinking after 8pm, and for the entirety of National Crate Day.

Councillor Penny Clark says they have three options - no change, banning public drinking for crate day, and extending the public drinking ban from 8pm to 8am while also stopping crate day.

"From my point of view, I'm keen to see them adopt the first proposal which is let's stop Crate Day silliness and let's try and pull back on the hours of free outdoor drinking."

Clark says crate day is what kicked this off.

"I do not agree that it is a Kiwi institution. It is a fairly new phenomenon It causes mayhem - the litter and chaos that Queenstowners have to deal with, I just don't see it as something that needs to happen."

She says she'll be voting in favour of extending the alcohol ban.
