Confusion reigns over mysterious explosive noise

Police are at a loss over what caused what sounded like an explosion in the eastern Wellington suburbs overnight.

A police spokesman says officers were called to a street fight involving a group of youths in Strathmore around 10.30pm yesterday.

He says despite reports on social media of an explosion in the area and some of those involved in the fight having knives, police were unable to confirm those details.

An Ahuriri street resident who doesn't want to be named, says he raced outside following the bang just before 10 o'clock last night, only to find no trace of any damage.

He says there's no doubt it must have been a significant explosion.

"One of our neighbours over the road, his alarm in his car was set off as well, so that just doesn't happen when it's a loud bang."

Police confirm they attended the scene around 10.30pm, but could not determine what had caused the loud bang.
