A Chinese politician's "very disappointed" hearing Simon Bridges comments around race.
On tape, Bridges discusses MP positions, and which ethnicity would be more valuable to the party.
Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon is also the National President of the New Zealand Chinese Association.
He says it seems Bridges thinks ethnic representation in his party is token.
He says he doesn't believe Bridges genuinely wants diversity in National.
Foon says members of the Chinese community aren't pleased.
"They're not gutted, but they are disappointed. They are disappointed that that's how the National Party leadership thinks."
Foon says race shouldn't be a consideration.
"Generally in any employment or participation, governance is generally, whether it is male, female, ethnic mix, on ability, which would be the best way to choose."
