Coach Steve Hansen is in Berlin for the ceremony and has told TV One's Breakfast it's a fantastic honour.

"Just to be nominated was fantastic, and you know to be able to win and put New Zealand on the map is great."

The former All Blacks first five has beaten swimmer Michael Phelps, surfer Mick Fanning, skiier Lindsey Vonn, runner David Rudisha and heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Carter overcame injury and form problems to help lead the All Blacks to back to back Rugby World Cups in London, being named man of the match in the final.

Dan Carter said it has been "a very special year for me, 2015, especially after all the injury setbacks I've had over the last couple of years."

He's the third Kiwi to win a Laureus award after Sir Peter Blake and Levi Sherwood.

The All Blacks were one of six finalists for sports team of the year.

Nominated for the sixth time, the All Blacks were up against the likes of Barcelona, the Golden State Warriors and the US women's football team.

Cautiously optimistic before the ceremony, Richie McCaw said they've put their best foot forward.

"Probably got a chance, their's not a lot else we could have done to be honest. So if you don't win you can't say we wish we had have done that or whatever. Just to be here is cool."

Serena Williams won the Sportswoman of the Year Award.
