Call for more female QCs

A call is being made for more of New Zealand's female lawyers to step up and join the ranks of Queen's Counsel.

Wellington Women in Law Committee member Rachael Dewar says just 18% are women, despite females making up 47% of all practising lawyers and 36% of Barristers.

Lawyer Rachael Dewar suggests one contributing factor.

"A lot of women are not getting the required experience in those top litigation roles to get them up to the level where they would qualify."

She says a lot of women are too modest about their expertise and abilities.

The Law Society is encouraging women to consider becoming a QC, and to do so early in their careers in order to gain the necessary experience.

A female Queens Council is confident more women will join her profession.

Marie Dyhrberg says things are changing.

"More women are reaching that standard whereby they are staying longer, doing better cases, achieving seniority and therefore they are feeling like they are qualifying."
