Police will be working closely with intelligence agencies to determine how real the threat is for the Auckland man named on a "hit list" published by Islamic State.

Authorities said they can find no reason for the man's name to be on a "hit list" published by the terror group, and his family said it's also at a loss to understand.

They're offering advice and support to the man and his family.

Auckland private investigator Graham Aylett headed up the police probe into the 2005 London bombings, masterminded by Al Qaeda.

He said the given Islamic State's capabilities, the threat must be taken seriously.

My Aylett thinks any individual or organisation on the list is likely to be there for a reason, as ISIS is not the sort of group to pick things out at random.

"The individual is on that list for a reason in my view, ISIS is not the type of organisation that like to pick people out at random."

He said police will be working closely with intelligence agencies to determine how real the threat is... and they may also be providing protection to the man and his family.

Mr Aylett said options for protection may include panic alarms, surveillance, relocation or even name changes.

He said it will ultimately be up to the individual to decide what they want.
