Auckland Transport to remove giant penises around potholes

Auckland Transport says the man who drew giant penises on the road to highlight the potholes near his home should think about the extra cost to clean up what he created.

Tired of contacting authorities about the state of the road near his home for about 18 months and getting nowhere, Auckland man Geoff Upson yesterday painted two giant 20m long penises around the potholes on Kahikatea Flat Rd, near Waitoki.

He says he did it after 18 months of being ignored, hoping the penises would spark action from road authorities.

Upson posted a video of himself on Facebook showing the fluoro green penises, about 1.2m wide, surrounding the numerous potholes on the road, drawing attention to the hazards.

Auckland Transport's media adviser James Ireland told the Herald that a "permanent fix will be done on this section of the road to ensure this problem stops happening".

It is not clear when the permanent fix will happen but, in the meantime, AT will be "painting out the offensive graffiti".

"Mr Upson may want to reflect on the extra cost that his actions have imposed on local ratepayers."

Kahikatea Flat Rd is a busy road connecting State Highway 16 to Dairy Flat Highway.

Upson says the road registers about 6200 daily traffic movements, including a high number of heavy vehicles.

Upson's video has had nearly 10,000 views in 24 hours.
