Adoption reform sought

A push to get adoption reform onto the political agenda.

Adoption Action claims the current adoption act fails to meet obligations as set under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

It says more is needed to be done to give an adopted child greater rights and access to their adoption records.

Spokesman Mark Henaghan says the 1955 Act is long overdue a makeover.

"Structure of families, the whole way we treat children, the whole way we deal with families has changed so dramatically since 1955 it's just almost ridiculous to have a statute that's applicable in 2014."

It says the act, which dates back to 1955, fails to adequately meet New Zealand's obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child.

Spokesman Mark Henaghan says it's time for politicians to put the issue back on the agenda.

"It's just about dignity and respect to those who've been through the adoption process. Both the adopting parents and the adopted child and making sure it works well for everyone."
