Auckland University researchers are questioning whether institutional racism exists over Maori home ownership.
They've released the results of a new study, which has found people who look stereotypically Maori are less likely to own their own home.
The researchers have also tested the correlation against a whole host of other variables, like gender, age, religion, or income - but the result is the same.
Associate Professor Chris Sibley says the finding is in line with similar international studies.
"But the one we really want to answer is why - why are we seeing this association."
