Labour's selection for Tamaki Makaurau is causing concern for some within the electorate's largest iwi.

Ngapuhi represents the biggest proportion of enrolled Maori in the area, and it isn't happy with Labour choosing Peeni Henare as their man.

Kaumatua David Rankin says Mr Henare and his whanau have actively campaigned against Ngapuhi's Treaty settlement.

"Having him in Parliament could actually affect our opportunities of actually settling our grievances with the Crown."

Mr Rankin wants to see Peeni Henare make a statement on the Ngapuhi settlement, to appease voters.
