Wairarapa's last surviving veteran of the 28th Maori Battalion has died at the age of 88, following a long battle with illness.
Kingi Matthews from D Company was also a Maori All Black, and past president of the Wairarapa Bush Rugby Union.
He's currently lying in state at Papawai Marae in Greytown, with his funeral to be held on Wednesday.
