The Far North has voted against establishing Maori wards for the 2016 and 2019 District Council elections.

Over 13,500 votes were received and 68 percent of people voted against establishing Maori wards.

Far North mayor John Carter says this doesn't diminish their commitment to improving their relationship with Maori.

He says they'll be speaking to local Maori about non-electoral representation options such as a standing committee.
