Clean-up underway after storm batters South Island

Publish Date
Thu, 24 Jan 2019, 3:38PM

Clean-up continues in the South Island following last nights storm.

Winds up to 170 kilometres an hour left streets littered with branches, construction debris and tipped-over rubbish bins.

Several hundred home in parts of Christchurch, the Selwyn District and Banks Peninsula are still without power.

Further South, a generator has restored power to all of the Glenorchy township while crews work to repair faults.

In Queenstown, the council has put up warning tape and signage in Jardine Park - asking the public to stay out of the area.

A number of trees were damaged and are currently being assessed to see if they pose a danger to the public.
