Police in Invercargill are warning locals after a spate of shed burglaries and thefts from cars.

Burglars have been targeting unlocked cars in driveways along with open garages and sheds in the back of properties over the past few days.

Police have said many of these burglaries have occurred in the evenings, when residents are home.

The darkness provided by it not being daylight savings has given extra protection for thieves in the area.

Police in the area are reminding residents they will continue to try and prevent the burglaries, but said those who are home during the day should be weary of any suspicious or unknown people.

A few simple thing you can do make sure your home is secure when you are out:

·        Lock your car and your garage
·        Keep the doors locked, even when you are at home
·        Keep your spare key in a safe place
·        Generally, the more expensive the lock, the more effective it will be
·        Consider installing burglar alarms
·        Sensor lights act as a deterrent

Police are asking anyone who might have information or has been approached to purchase jewellery or other similar items to contact the Invercargill police or report to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.
