Mowing risks raised in Council sentencing

WorkSafe New Zealand wants all organisations to notice the risks when mowing public areas used by children.

This follows yesterday's sentencing of the Hastings District Council over the death of four-year-old Uetaha Ransfield-Wanoa at Kirkpatrick Park in October 2013.

The council has been fined $29,500 and must pay $65,000 in emotional reparation after an employee ran over the child with a lawn-mower.

WorkSafe New Zealand chief inspector Keith Stewart says the council had an informal system for dealing with risks of children around mowers, but nothing was formally documented in its procedures.

He says giving staff clear guidance could have made all the difference to this victim and his family.
