A joint initiative on the Kapiti Coast has seen parents give up their old car seats – once realising they were out of date.

Police, Kapiti Coast District Council and Plunket stopped more than 100 vehicles in a two-day checkpoint in Mill Road in Otaki.

Kapiti Coast District Council Transport Safety Coordinator, Bruce Johnston says there was a number of children in the front seat, and many in seats not properly secured.

He says others were also in expired seats.

"We actually took three seats from parents and one of the positives of the checkpoint was that a grandparent and a parent actually contacted us the following day and actually asked us to bring up new seats and replace them."
