New research indicates Pasifika kids need diet change

A new study has found many Pacific Island children are growing up eating unhealthy food, and families need to be supported to change this.

AUT researchers say Pasifika kids are eating nutritionally poor but energy rich processed carbohydrates, from the ages of four to six.

These are the likes of white bread, cereals and rice - along with snack foods like chips and noodles, the type of food which can contribute to rapid and unhealthy weight gain.

Researchers hope the study results can be used by organisations and the community to encourage healthier eating of a diverse range of whole foods and less processed carbohydrates.
