A Christchurch City Councillor says the alcohol industry is just after money, and it is a major concern for the public.
The City Council, District Health Board and Police have all joint forces to create a new alcohol action plan, which will be aiming to strengthen the community, reduce accessibility and expose alcohol marketing.
City Councillor Anne Galloway says analysis shows the alcohol industry keeps prices low and uses effective advertising that normalises drinking, but it is damaging communities.
"It's a battle being up against the big guys and as much ammunition as possible is needed to stand up against them."
Galloway also says there is a clear correlation between the density of alcohol suppliers with alcohol premises in Christchurch are rising, and the increased crime rate.
"Staff and community law representatives will educate community boards on how they can stand against proposed liquor stores."
The council has approached the government asking for a policy review, and will continue pressing for this until action is taken to resolve the issue.
