UPDATED 1.16PM: A suspiciously wrapped plastic bottle prompted a bomb squad call out in Hamilton this morning.

The bottle was discovered by a passerby at around 9.30 this morning outside the Davies Corner shops in Fairfield.

A section of Hukanui street and the shops were cordoned off while a specialist bomb squad from Auckland checked the bottle.

Sergeant Craig Taylor says the small bottle was packaged in a very suspicious manner.

He says the bomb squad have taken a look at the package and have deemed it to be of no risk.

Hukanui Road is now open and cordons have been removed.
